We’ll be honest with you. Nothing beats the taste of fresh, live crawfish during a mid-season crawfish boil. Unfortunately, the crawfish season usually only runs through December to July—mais, that’s only half the year!
So what’s anyone to do during the other half of the year? Despite what you may have heard, crawfish freeze perfectly fine in the freezer—whether you’re freezing them whole or just the tail meat! We’ve thrown together a guide to help dispel some of the confusion surrounding frozen crawfish meat—while it’s not quite the same as fresh crawfish, if handled correctly, it can taste almost as good!
Frozen Crawfish Tails
Available all-year-round, frozen crawfish tails are the perfect snack to satisfy the envie for everyone’s favorite Cajun delicacy. Pre-cooked and frozen in their own fat, frozen crawfish tails offer all of the savory goodness of their live counterparts—without the hassle of needing boiling equipment.
While they’re not good to boil on their own, as the meat will break apart in the water, they can be served just about every other way you can think of. Here are a few of our favorite ways to serve crawfish tails:
Whole Frozen Crawfish
Yeah, that’s right! You can freeze whole crawfish, shell and all. Whole crawfish are commonly frozen towards the end of the season, after being boiled, to cope with the difficult 6 months when the cajun crustacean is out of season.
Freezing whole crawfish is simple! Just take your leftover whole crawfish, place them into freezer bags and seal them up as airtight as possible. Then, freeze them as quickly as you can; cooked crawfish are highly perishable so the longer it takes for them to freeze the more likely they are to spoil.
To reheat whole frozen crawfish, you can drop the frozen crawdads in some boiling water for only a few minutes and…voila! You have delicious boiled crawfish ready-to-serve
